The type of food that you eat plays a very major role in your weight loss initiatives. Basically food provides energy to the body which is measured in terms of calories. These calories are required for the general upkeep and functioning of the same. However, when you start consuming more calories than you need, then the same are stored in your body resulting in weight gain. In short, to lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories than those required by your body.

The above can easily be accomplished by creating and following a healthy eating plan. This approach is completely different than following the latest “fad” diet. This is because, such “fad” diets limit your portions to very small sizes or excludes certain foods. Although this may work in the short term, sticking to such diets over a longer period of time (To see substantial results) is usually out of question.

Additionally such weight loss diets also excludes certain essential nutrients so as to produce “magic” results. It’s beyond doubt that excluding such essential nutrients in the long term is sure to develop major risks. Instead, by incorporating a healthy eating plan, which is independent of any nutrient deficiency, you can dramatically increase your chances of good health and quality life over the long term. A healthy eating plan also provides the option of choosing a variety of foods based on your likes and dislikes thereby replacing the monotonous dieting plan of a “fad” diet.

Now I’ll provide some general guidelines for designing your own healthy eating pan based on your likes and dislikes:

1. Make sure your eating plan includes fruits, vegetables and sufficient quantity of whole grains. These are rich sources for a variety of natural nutrients required by human body. Of course you can select these based on your own choices but always maintain a good quantity of green vegetables. Further, you must lower intake of rich sources of fat, which also include some of the dairy products.

2. When it comes to dairy products then you can incorporate lean meat, fish, eggs and other poultry products. They are usually rich in proteins which is essential for growth of muscles in the body. In case you’re a vegetarian then you can substitute the above with foods that are rich in beans and nuts.

3. You must minimize consumption of foods that contain a high quantity of saturated or trans fats. Such foods increase the level of cholesterol in the body which is responsible for several heart related ailments including heart attacks. You must also control intake of sodium, found in common salt, as it’s a known culprit for high blood pressure. Soft drinks, which contain added flavors and sugars, also need to be consumed in a controlled manner.

Another important tip to remember at all times is to read nutrition label when ever you’re buying something from a food store. Such a label is found on most packaged foods and it conveys information in terms of calories and nutrient percentage per serving of the food.
